Grout quantities from supplied tile and joint dimensions.
How does a regular joint-volume estimate differ from a product’s stated coverage?
Use the regular grid model explicitly
For rectangular tile length L, width W and supplied joint j, the repeating cell has area (L + j) × (W + j). The model’s joint fraction is 1 − L × W / ((L + j) × (W + j)). Multiply the measured grid area by that fraction and the supplied filled depth. It is an idealised repeated-cell estimate, not a complete installation specification.
Volume-to-mass conversion needs a compatible supplied value
For the independent example, an appropriate supplied density of 1,800 kg/m³ gives about 8.3673 kg before allowance. An illustrative 10% allowance gives about 9.2041 kg. Five-kilogram packs round to two packs, or 10 kg nominal purchased mass. The density and allowance are illustrative inputs, not manufacturer defaults.
Check the manufacturer’s coverage before purchasing
The selected product’s coverage chart can use its own tile, joint and application basis. Compare the model with that exact stated basis and ask the supplier about a discrepancy. Do not substitute dry powder bulk density for a different mass-to-filled-volume basis or infer mixed yield solely from package weight.
Keep separate products and details separate
Different selected grout products and specified joint depths need separate estimates and pack rounding. The calculation does not cover movement-joint sealant, boundary details or chemical preparation. Use the established specification for those items rather than extending this grid formula to every gap.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Record the selected regular tile dimensions.
- Use the joint dimensions from the established specification.
- Calculate the modelled joint fraction and filled volume.
- Use a compatible supplied mass basis and compare with product coverage.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Joint fraction | Space outside the tile face in the repeating grid cell. |
| Filled depth | A specified input, not chosen by the model. |
| Product coverage | Check the actual product’s stated application basis. |
Worked comparison
With illustrative 0.2 m square tiles and a specified 0.01 m joint, the modelled fraction is 1 − 0.04/0.0441, about 0.09297. Across 10 m² at a supplied 0.005 m filled depth, joint volume is about 0.0046485 m³.
Check before using the estimate
Boundary joints, unusual tile shapes and product shrinkage are outside this model.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
