MEASUREMENTS AND PURCHASE DECISIONS

Raised bed soil volume: internal dimensions and fill level.

How much bagged soil corresponds to the measured empty volume of a rectangular bed?

Measure the void you actually intend to fill

Use internal dimensions and the planned fill level. If the same 2 m × 1 m bed already contains 0.1 m of material and your supplied target is 0.3 m, the missing layer is 0.2 m: 400 L before allowance. Do not order the entire wall-height volume again.

Keep fill layers and products separate

If your existing plan includes different materials or layers, calculate their supplied dimensions separately. Equal litres do not make products interchangeable. Do not combine bag rounding across different selected products.

Enter the calculator’s units carefully

The Soil Calculator accepts measured rectangular or circular sections, section count, depth, allowance and bag volume. Its geometric result does not analyse the mixture. In the 600 L example, 600 ÷ 50 is twelve bags without allowance; 660 ÷ 50 rounds up to fourteen with the illustrative allowance.

Interpret surplus and cost correctly

Fourteen bags at an illustrative 8 currency units each cost 112 before delivery and other items. The 40 L surplus is purchased volume beyond the allowed requirement. It does not predict the final settled level, moisture content or material weight.

Use the matching calculator

Use this decision sequence

  1. Measure internal length and width.
  2. Measure the intended unfilled depth, rather than the outside wall height.
  3. Calculate each compatible fill section separately.
  4. Apply your supplied allowance and round up to the selected bag volume.

Keep the quantities distinct

Quantity or assumptionHow to use it
External dimensionsInclude walls and can overstate fill volume.
Internal fill depthOnly the depth of material still required.
Bag volumeUse the selected product’s labelled volume.

Worked comparison

An illustrative internal bed 2 m long and 1 m wide needs 0.3 m of fill. Volume is 0.6 m³ or 600 L. With a supplied 10% allowance, 660 L requires fourteen 50 L bags: 700 L purchased and 40 L arithmetic surplus.

Check before using the estimate

The supplied allowance is not a recommended settlement or compaction factor.

All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
