Room furniture planning: measured footprints and a consistent scale.
How can you compare furniture positions using the actual room and product dimensions?
Measure the fixed room before arranging items
The IKEA measurement reference records room dimensions and the positions of fixed features such as openings. Start with that measured outline instead of resizing the drawing to fit a desired sofa. Keep a written dimension list with the sketch so a copied or resized image does not silently change the scale.
Use the same scale everywhere
The 1:20 example divides every represented length by twenty. A 0.6 m deep selected console is 3 cm deep on that drawing. If you paste a furniture image at another scale, its apparent fit is not a measurement. The Scale Drawing Calculator converts a drawn length and scale to the represented actual length.
Distinguish closed footprints from use
A folded desk, open drawer or extended sofa bed can have a different occupied footprint. Record those dimensions from the selected product rather than modelling only the closed object. Any required access or circulation constraint must come from the existing plan or appropriate requirements; this article does not choose a universal minimum.
Compare alternatives with a named constraint
For an illustrative 1.2 m space between fixed boundaries, a selected 0.9 m deep item leaves 0.3 m arithmetically, while a selected 0.6 m item leaves 0.6 m. Those differences are measurements, not a claim that either gap is an acceptable walkway. Check the established requirements before choosing an arrangement.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Measure the room outline and fixed features.
- Record the actual dimensions of the selected furniture.
- Choose one drawing scale for the room and all footprints.
- Compare arrangements while keeping supplied access requirements explicit.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Room outline | Measured available boundary. |
| Furniture footprint | Actual selected product dimensions. |
| Required clearance | An established constraint, not chosen by this calculation. |
Worked comparison
At a 1:20 scale, a measured 4 m × 3 m room is drawn 20 cm × 15 cm. A selected 2 m × 0.9 m sofa has a 10 cm × 4.5 cm footprint on the same drawing.
Check before using the estimate
A plan-view fit does not prove delivery access or compliant circulation.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
Sources and product references
References support the factual distinctions and scope described above. Growing guidance is regional and care instructions are product-specific. Worked numerical examples are independent illustrative arithmetic.
