Fiberglass, aluminium and pet-resistant insect screens: product records and roll fit.
Which differences should you record before ordering replacement insect-screen material?
Identify an insect-screen product
Record the exact mesh product, usable width, roll length, intended screen frame and any supplied fitting allowances. A screen name does not establish a fall barrier, security function or animal enclosure. Screens must not be treated as child or pet fall protection.
Material and trade names describe different products
Phifer’s product range distinguishes aluminium screening, fiberglass screening and its PetScreen product. Its hardware brochure identifies PetScreen as vinyl-coated polyester. Therefore pet-resistant is not simply another name for an aluminium or fiberglass mesh, and it does not establish pet containment.
Compare the selected specification
Keep mesh opening, stated visibility, product thickness or spline compatibility and named use restrictions with the record where the supplier provides them. A manufacturer’s qualitative rating within its range is not a universal cross-brand durability test. Do not infer airflow, insect exclusion or lifespan from roll area alone.
Roll width can determine the order
For three independently supplied blanks each 0.6 m wide by 0.9 m long, a 1.2 m usable roll width can hold two blanks side by side if the selected cutting orientation permits it. Two 0.9 m rows use 1.8 m of roll length and leave one unused blank position. A 0.9 m wide roll may instead require three 0.9 m rows, or 2.7 m of length. These supplied blanks already include any established allowances.
Price lengths and complete packs
If each hypothetical product is sold only in 2 m lengths, the 1.8 m scenario needs one length and the 2.7 m scenario two. At illustrative 20 per length, the subtotals are 20 and 40. The cutting layout does not establish frame compatibility, a repair method or the best material for a particular opening.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Record the exact selected products and the intended comparison.
- Separate source-supported properties from missing suitability data.
- Measure the confirmed quantity and request complete matching quotations.
- Compare the supplied scenarios without inferring safety or performance from price.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Fiberglass or aluminium | Different named product records. |
| Pet-resistant | A product property, not containment or fall protection. |
| Roll width | Can change how many blank rows fit. |
Worked comparison
Three supplied 0.6 × 0.9 m blanks fit in two 0.9 m rows across a 1.2 m usable width, using 1.8 m. A narrower layout needing 2.7 m purchases two hypothetical 2 m lengths; at 20 each, the order costs 40.
Check before using the estimate
Keep dated quotes, product codes and assumptions with the comparison. A general material name does not establish the selected product’s performance.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
