Annual and perennial flower borders: selection records and plant counts.
How can a flower-border plan account for plant life cycles without inventing a universal spacing?
Start with life cycle and local performance
NC State distinguishes annuals, biennials and perennials and explains that climate can change how a plant is grown. A plant sold for seasonal bedding is not automatically a perennial at your site. The chapter also describes planning for different flowering periods rather than assuming every flower remains in bloom all season.
Use the nursery identity for specific requirements
Names such as salvia, begonia, geranium or aster can cover multiple plants and cultivars. Record the selected plant’s mature spread, light and moisture guidance from its nursery label or a matching extension profile. Do not choose spacing from a generic photograph or from the size of the purchase pot.
Separate groups by their selected spacing
For an illustrative plan, one 2 m × 1 m zone with supplied 0.25 m edge margins and 0.5 m grid spacing has eight positions. Another separately planned zone can have a different count. Keep selected species and colours in separate rows, even if the mathematical grid happens to be identical.
Calculate the purchased plant mix
If the eight-position zone specifies five plants of one selected cultivar and three of another, four-plant packs require two packs for the first and one for the second. Three packs supply twelve plants, not eight interchangeable plants. Any spare allocation should remain explicit in the plan.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Record the exact item and the scope described below.
- Check the cited guidance against your product or local growing conditions.
- Measure only the quantities needed for the selected plan.
- Keep the supplied assumptions with the purchase estimate.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Life cycle | Check the plant and local climate. |
| Mature spread | Use a species or cultivar source. |
| Colour group | Round separate selected plant products separately. |
Worked comparison
A selected eight-plant mix split 5 + 3 needs 2 + 1 four-plant packs, while a single compatible eight-plant order needs two packs.
Check before using the estimate
The arithmetic does not specify plant spacing or guarantee a flowering period.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
Sources and product references
References support the factual distinctions and scope described above. Growing guidance is regional and care instructions are product-specific. Worked numerical examples are independent illustrative arithmetic.
