Groundcover selection: site conditions, spreading behaviour and counts.
How do you select a regionally appropriate groundcover before calculating a purchase?
Match the site rather than assuming all low plants are equivalent
Maryland Extension advises evaluating sun exposure, soil moisture, drainage, browsing and the chosen groundcover’s growth behaviour. It also distinguishes vigorous garden spread from invasiveness in surrounding habitats. Nursery availability does not by itself establish local ecological suitability.
Check regional restrictions before a shortlist
Use an exact species identity and current local guidance for any proposed groundcover. A name such as vinca, wild ginger or creeping phlox should not be treated as a universal planting recommendation. The Maryland reference includes regional invasive-plant resources; readers elsewhere need their own regional check.
Calculate a selected grid rather than promising time to coverage
An illustrative 3 m × 2 m zone with supplied 0.25 m margins and 0.5 m spacings contains six positions along one axis and four along the other: 24 plants. The supplied spacing determines that count. It does not predict how quickly the plants spread or whether the site will be fully covered.
Keep edge and exclusion measurements
An existing path, tree base or unplanted zone can change the selected layout. Measure those boundaries before counting. Do not subtract a square-metre exclusion and assume it removes an integer number of plants unless the actual positions are reconciled.

Use this decision sequence
- Record the exact item and the scope described below.
- Check the cited guidance against your product or local growing conditions.
- Measure only the quantities needed for the selected plan.
- Keep the supplied assumptions with the purchase estimate.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Site match | Check measured conditions and exact species. |
| Spread | Does not equal harmlessness outside the garden. |
| Grid count | Does not predict establishment or erosion control. |
Worked comparison
A supplied 24-position layout sold in six-plant packs requires four packs. Its 6 m² zone is a measured input, not evidence of a recommended planting density.
Check before using the estimate
No invasive-status guarantee, herbicide method or slope-stability design is supplied.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
Sources and product references
References support the factual distinctions and scope described above. Growing guidance is regional and care instructions are product-specific. Worked numerical examples are independent illustrative arithmetic.
