Flowering bulbs: seasonal checks and a separate quantity plan.
What should be checked before counting bulbs for a measured garden layout?
Different bulb groups need different seasonal checks
The NC State chapter treats spring-flowering and summer- or fall-flowering bulbs separately and includes winter hardiness and storage considerations. Do not apply a single planting month to crocus, tulip, iris and dahlia merely because they are sold with bulbs or related underground structures.
Keep the named product with its instructions
Record the exact selected species or cultivar, the local planting window and the depth and spacing stated by an appropriate source. This article does not choose those dimensions, explain storage treatments or identify plants as edible. If the plant identity or regional suitability is unclear, resolve it before placing an order.
Count a supplied arrangement
For an illustrative row with specified centres at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 m along a 1 m run, the selected layout contains four positions. Three identical supplied rows contain twelve positions. A general area quotient can miss first-position offsets and edge margins.
Round each selected bulb product
Twelve compatible bulbs sold in ten-bulb packs need two packs. If the design instead specifies six of one cultivar and six of another, each selected product needs its own rounding. Record planned spare bulbs separately rather than changing the selected spacing to use every purchased item.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Record the exact item and the scope described below.
- Check the cited guidance against your product or local growing conditions.
- Measure only the quantities needed for the selected plan.
- Keep the supplied assumptions with the purchase estimate.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Season | Confirm group, cultivar and location. |
| Specified positions | Count the actual layout. |
| Pack basis | Keep different selected products separate. |
Worked comparison
Twelve specified positions in one product require two ten-bulb packs, with eight bulbs beyond that selected layout.
Check before using the estimate
This is an order calculation, not a planting-depth or seasonal-storage procedure.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
Sources and product references
References support the factual distinctions and scope described above. Growing guidance is regional and care instructions are product-specific. Worked numerical examples are independent illustrative arithmetic.
