Count visible coffer surfaces without doubling horizontal area.
Why do recessed ceiling openings add return area rather than another full ceiling face?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Use the measured overall horizontal footprint once.
- Confirm the specified opening grid fits that footprint.
- Add each opening’s exposed vertical return perimeter times recess depth.
- Exclude hidden construction surfaces and separately chosen trim profiles.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Horizontal underside | Combines flat grid faces and recessed opening faces. |
| Vertical returns | Add developed surface around the recesses. |
| Hidden framing | Does not automatically belong in a finish takeoff. |
Worked comparison
A 4 m by 3 m ceiling has 12 m² horizontal visible area. Four 1 m square recesses with 0.1 m deep exposed returns add 4×4×0.1 = 1.6 m². The total is 13.6 m²; adding the 4 m² opening faces again would double-count part of the horizontal finish.
