MEASUREMENTS AND PURCHASE DECISIONS
Keep cut and fill separate in an elevation grid.
Why should signed elevation differences not cancel before estimating volumes?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Divide the measured area into non-overlapping cells.
- Enter each cell’s mean target-minus-existing height difference.
- Sum positive cell volumes as fill and negative cell magnitudes as cut.
- Discuss reuse, material suitability and volume changes separately before comparing deliveries.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Positive height difference | Needs fill in this geometric schedule. |
| Negative height difference | Represents cut volume. |
| Net difference | Does not by itself describe deliveries or disposal. |
Worked comparison
A 10 m² cell needs +0.20 m, giving 2 m³ fill. A 5 m² cell is at −0.30 m, giving 1.5 m³ cut. Their signed difference is 0.5 m³, but the geometric work remains 2 m³ fill and 1.5 m³ cut.
Check before using the estimate
The calculator does not declare excavated material suitable for reuse or choose an earthwork design.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
