MEASUREMENTS AND PURCHASE DECISIONS
Read a masonry starter and closure schedule.
Why do alternating course starters change cut pieces?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Use the supplied course length, unit length and joint width.
- Enter starter length for each repeated course group.
- Count full modules in the remaining straight span.
- Report the geometric closure width separately and keep offcut reuse outside the schedule.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Full module | One full unit plus its applicable joint. |
| Starter | A specified cut length at the course start. |
| Closure | The remaining geometric end cut. |
Worked comparison
A 2 m course using 0.20 m units with 0.01 m joints and no starter fits 9 full units plus a 0.11 m closure. The cut-piece count is 10, but the closure dimension matters before ordering and cutting.
Check before using the estimate

All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
