A spiral wrap is longer than separate circumferential rings.
Does a helical wrap also advance along the body?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Use the diameter measured at the wrapping centreline.
- Enter the axial advance per turn from the specified layout.
- Combine circumference and advance as a right triangle for each turn.
- Include the partial final turn and separately entered end allowance before roll rounding.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| One closed ring | Length equals circumference. |
| One helical turn | Includes axial advance as well. |
| Number of turns | Axial distance divided by supplied pitch. |
Worked comparison
With an illustrative circumference of 1 m and advance of 1 m per turn, each helical turn is √2 = 1.4142 m long. A 3 m axial distance contains three turn-equivalents and needs 4.2426 m of strip before end allowances. Three plain circumferential rings would total only 3 m and would omit the axial movement.
Check before using the estimate
Pitch is supplied; no overlap, adhesion, wrapping suitability or required width is recommended.
