Vegetable garden planning: spacing, light and a local planting calendar.
How do you turn a locally appropriate crop plan into plant counts and soil quantities?
Choose a crop schedule for your location
NC State’s vegetable chapter distinguishes crop plans and provides an intensive-spacing table; its planting dates refer to named North Carolina regions. A date copied from that table is not a national or worldwide planting date. Use your local extension guidance and the exact cultivar’s seed packet to select the sowing or transplanting window.
Keep the layout system visible
In that intensive table, carrots have 2–3 in between plants and tomatoes 18–24 in. Those figures belong to the described system, not every row spacing or container arrangement. A bush bean, pole bean, head lettuce and leaf lettuce should not silently share a generic spacing input. Record both the along-row spacing and the row spacing selected for your plan.
Calculate positions only after selecting the inputs
For an independent illustrative bed 2 m long and 1 m wide, supplied 0.25 m starting and ending margins with 0.5 m spacings give four positions along the length and two across the width: eight plants. The Plant Grid Calculator uses the supplied margins and spacing, rather than recommending them.
Separate soil volume from the growing specification
If the same bed’s established plan calls for 0.2 m additional fill, its geometric requirement is 0.4 m³ or 400 L before allowance. The Soil Calculator does not select the growing medium or nutrient treatment. Record the chosen crop plan, cultivar and regional source with the measured bed before purchasing plants or fill.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Record the exact item and the scope described below.
- Check the cited guidance against your product or local growing conditions.
- Measure only the quantities needed for the selected plan.
- Keep the supplied assumptions with the purchase estimate.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Crop schedule | Use a named local source and cultivar. |
| Spacing system | Distinguish intensive beds, rows and containers. |
| Purchase count | Count supplied positions, then selected pack contents. |
Worked comparison
Eight planned positions sold in four-plant packs require two packs; a 400 L fill requirement sold in 50 L bags requires eight bags before any separately supplied allowance.
Check before using the estimate
The worked dimensions and fill level are illustrative; no planting success or harvest quantity is predicted.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
Sources and product references
References support the factual distinctions and scope described above. Growing guidance is regional and care instructions are product-specific. Worked numerical examples are independent illustrative arithmetic.
