MEASURE ONCE. PLAN YOUR PURCHASE.

Mulch calculator.

Estimate mulch bags and bulk cubic yards for multiple beds, subtract existing depth, and compare your bag and delivered bulk prices.

LANDSCAPING

Your inputs

Use measurements from your plan and properties from your chosen product. Any prefilled values are illustrative.

Shortcuts only; choose your own allowance above.
Where to get this value

Enter your own allowance. Presets are input shortcuts, not a construction recommendation.

How to use this mulch calculator

Find how much new mulch is needed across several beds, including a refresh over existing mulch. The tool reports whole bags and bulk volume; optional supplier quotes compare bagged material with delivered bulk.

  1. Add each rectangular bed with its measured length and width.
  2. Enter the target layer depth from your plan and the depth already present. Only the positive difference requires new mulch.
  3. Enter the actual volume per bag and your chosen allowance. The combined order is rounded to whole bags once.
  4. To compare purchases, enter both prices and the bulk delivery charge. A bulk increment applies only to the bulk quote. Prices remain physically consistent when switching units.
Formula and assumptions
BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculation works.

Each bed can have a different existing layer. A bed already at or above your chosen target needs no top-up. Depths are inputs, not gardening recommendations. Optional prices compare whole bags with bulk volume rounded to your supplier increment and a single delivery charge. A price of zero leaves that quote unpriced; it is not treated as free material.

New volume = Σ(area × max(0, target depth − existing depth))Calculated with normalised units

Mulch bags to purchase: 9 bags

Top-up depth differs from the finished depth

The added volume is based on the difference between target and existing depth in each bed. Existing coverage reduces a top-up requirement, but it must be measured.

  • Enter target and existing depth independently for every bed.
  • Use the volume printed on the bag, not its weight.
  • Compare bulk pricing and delivery only with prices supplied by you; a cheaper unit rate can still produce a higher delivered total.

What changes when one measurement changes?

Using the worked example above, change only existing effective depth from 25 to 0mm. Product specifications and all other inputs stay the same.

Mulch bags to purchase: 9 → 14bags

Both results are computed by the same current calculator engine. These are illustrative dimensions, not material or design recommendations.

Before you purchase

Use dimensions from your plan and properties from your chosen product. Any design spacing, section or fixing pattern must already be specified.

A US unit example

Two separate 10 ft × 10 ft beds with a specified target depth of 3 in and an existing 1 in layer need 200 × (2 ÷ 12) = 33.3333 ft³ of new mulch. An illustrative 10% allowance gives 36.6667 ft³, or 19 bags when the selected bag contains 2 ft³. The target depth is supplied by the plan.

Common questions

How much mulch do I need in bags or cubic yards?

The new layer volume is area multiplied by the positive difference between target and existing depths. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards, or by the selected bag volume and round up for bags.

Are bags always cheaper than bulk mulch?

The answer depends on your quotes, delivery and supplier increment. Enter both prices to compare the actual rounded quantities. An unavailable zero price is not interpreted as free material.

What if existing mulch is already deeper than the target?

That bed needs zero additional mulch. The calculator does not recommend removing the existing layer or changing the target depth.
