Trees and shrubs: mature-size checks before a planting budget.
What belongs in a tree or shrub selection record before calculating plant and mulch quantities?
The purchase pot is not the mature footprint
The extension references emphasise site conditions and room for the selected plant’s mature dimensions. Record the exact cultivar, mature height and spread, light, soil and regional hardiness. A label saying dwarf does not supply one standard size across species or rootstocks.
Keep selection separate from building constraints
Azalea, hydrangea, camellia, boxwood, juniper, lilac, birch, dogwood and magnolia are examples of names that need a matching plant profile. This guide does not specify setbacks from buildings or utilities, excavations, tree work or supporting structures. Resolve those constraints with the appropriate local services.
Budget the selected plant schedule
If an established plan calls for three selected shrubs at an illustrative 25 each, plant cost is 75. A different selected three-plant group at 40 each costs 120. Compare actual product sizes and included services before treating those as equivalent nursery offers.
Measure supplied mulch zones independently
For a supplied circular decorative mulch zone with radius 0.8 m and an excluded central radius of 0.2 m, the annular area is π × (0.8² − 0.2²), about 1.885 m². Any target layer depth must come from the established planting guidance; the calculator does not choose it.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Record the exact item and the scope described below.
- Check the cited guidance against your product or local growing conditions.
- Measure only the quantities needed for the selected plan.
- Keep the supplied assumptions with the purchase estimate.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Plant identity | Keep cultivar and regional reference. |
| Mature size | Not the dimensions of its nursery pot. |
| Budget | Use the actual quoted plant size and included services. |
Worked comparison
Three selected plants at an illustrative quote of 25 each cost 75 before any supplied delivery or service charge; the quoted plant size stays part of the comparison.
Check before using the estimate
No pruning, excavation, foundation protection or utility-clearance specification is provided.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
Sources and product references
References support the factual distinctions and scope described above. Growing guidance is regional and care instructions are product-specific. Worked numerical examples are independent illustrative arithmetic.
