Add seam allowance to both dimensions of each cushion panel.
Why is finished cushion surface area smaller than the fabric cut area?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Use the dimensions of the six-panel pattern already selected.
- Add the chosen seam allowance at both opposite edges of each panel.
- Calculate top, bottom and boxing rectangles separately.
- Use a roll layout after the panel takeoff rather than dividing area by fabric width blindly.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Finished surfaces | Omit fabric consumed by the seams. |
| Cut rectangles | Include allowance around every sewn edge. |
| Roll purchase | Also depends on width, orientation and pattern matching. |
Worked comparison
For a 1 m by 0.5 m by 0.2 m cushion with 50 mm allowance at every sewn edge, the two face rectangles are 1.1×0.6 m. The boxing rectangles have 0.3 m cut width. All six rectangles total 2.34 m². Their placement on a roll can require more purchased area than that net panel total.
Check before using the estimate
The pattern, allowance and permitted orientation are supplied. Zips, piping, shrinkage and motif matching are separate. The example values are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Replace them with your measured plan, selected product information and actual quote where relevant.
