Use the exposed contour width for painted trim.
Why can a moulding’s bounding face width understate its finish area?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Measure or obtain the developed exposed profile width from your chosen trim.
- Add run lengths only for portions receiving the same finish.
- Enter separately measured exposed end faces where applicable.
- Apply selected coating coverage to the resulting developed surface area.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Bounding width | Spans between the outer edges of a profile. |
| Developed width | Follows the exposed surface contours. |
| Run length | Extends that contour along the trim. |
Worked comparison
Three 2 m runs total 6 m. A 0.1 m developed exposed width gives 0.6 m² longitudinal surface; 0.02 m² measured exposed ends bring it to 0.62 m². Substituting an 0.08 m bounding face width would give 0.5 m² including ends and omit parts of the exposed contour.
Check before using the estimate
Use actual exposed dimensions or verified product geometry. The calculator does not derive an unknown curved profile or select a coating. The example values are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Replace them with your measured plan, selected product information and actual quote where relevant.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
