DIY versus ready-made: compare complete quoted budgets.
How do you compare a material-only DIY estimate with a ready-made purchase fairly?
Define the comparison before adding numbers
Record what each alternative includes: the specified item, dimensions, selected finish, delivery and any quoted services. A simple organiser and a fully assembled cabinet are not comparable solely because both provide storage. State differences that have not been priced.
Decide how to represent your time
If you assign no cash labour charge to your own time, the example DIY cash outlay is 115. If you value the supplied six hours at 12, the compared total is 187. Show both bases when relevant; do not disguise one as the other or invent a universal hourly rate.
Tools and deposits use different cost bases
Include hire charges on the supplied hire period. A refundable deposit affects cash required but should not be treated as a certain final expense. Existing tools can have zero new cash outlay while still having wear or consumable costs; include only the supplied values and label omissions.
Price whole purchases rather than theoretical consumption
If the plan needs part of a sheet or a fraction of a paint container, the cash purchase may still require the entire unit. Reusable leftover value belongs in a separate stated scenario, not an automatic discount. The lower arithmetic total does not establish performance, durability or suitability.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Define the same intended scope for both alternatives.
- Price whole material packs and specified hardware.
- Include your supplied labour, hired services and delivery charges.
- Compare the completed quote totals and list remaining unpriced items.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Material-only DIY | Does not include all project costs by default. |
| Ready-made quote | May exclude delivery, assembly or accessories. |
| Unpriced item | Unknown, not automatically zero. |
Worked comparison
Illustrative DIY inputs are 80 for whole material packs, 20 for hardware and 15 for delivery: 115 before labour. Six supplied hours valued at 12 per hour add 72, giving 187. A ready-made quote of 160 plus 20 delivery totals 180, assuming all other compared items are included.
Check before using the estimate
These are arithmetic inputs, not market prices or a recommendation to build or buy.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
