MEASUREMENTS AND PURCHASE DECISIONS
Count sheets with specified overlaps.
Why is nominal sheet area insufficient for a lapped sheet grid?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Use supplied sheet dimensions and lap dimensions.
- Specify the grid orientation before counting.
- Give the first sheet its full coverage and every following sheet its incremental coverage.
- Count each grid direction and multiply the resulting sheet counts.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| First sheet in a run | Covers its full physical dimension. |
| Following sheet | Adds physical dimension minus the specified lap. |
| Area-only estimate | Can miss required edge sheets. |
Worked comparison
For a 5 m run, 3 m sheets with a 0.2 m lap require 2 sheets: the first covers 3 m and the second adds 2.8 m. A separate 3 m width with 2 m sheets and the same lap also requires 2, producing 4 sheets in the supplied grid.
Check before using the estimate
Specified laps are inputs from a plan; these arithmetic counts do not approve reinforcement.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
