MEASUREMENTS AND PURCHASE DECISIONS

Separate tread and riser counts in a covering takeoff.

Can tread count be reused as riser count when ordering a surface covering?

Use the matching calculator

Use this decision sequence

  1. Measure the covered width from the already specified stair plan.
  2. Count the tread faces that actually receive the selected finish.
  3. Count the riser faces independently, including any separately specified end riser.
  4. Add landing face area separately and review cut layout before turning area into packs.

Keep the quantities distinct

Quantity or assumptionHow to use it
Tread facesUse horizontal covered depth and tread count.
Riser facesUse covered height and their own count.
LandingsAdd measured area without counting a tread twice.

Worked comparison

For 1 m covered width, ten 0.3 m tread faces cover 3 m². Eleven 0.2 m riser faces add 2.2 m², and a 2 m² landing brings the total to 7.2 m². Reusing ten as the riser count would omit 0.2 m² even though the width measurement is unchanged.

Check before using the estimate

This is a finish takeoff from supplied geometry. It does not select stair dimensions, nosings, fixing, slip resistance or accessibility requirements. The example values are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Replace them with your measured plan, selected product information and actual quote where relevant.

All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
