Treat wall openings differently for paint and wallpaper.
Why does subtracting opening area not automatically save full wallpaper drops?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- For paint, calculate net painted area using actual opening exclusions.
- For wallpaper, lay out full-width, full-height drops along the wall.
- Treat pieces above and below openings according to a feasible pattern-matched cut plan.
- Keep primer area and wallpaper roll cuts as separate quantities.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Paint coverage | Uses the net coated surface area. |
| Wallpaper drops | Uses width, height, trim and pattern cutting. |
| An opening | May remove area without removing a required full-height source drop. |
Worked comparison
A wall 4 m wide and 2.5 m high has 10 m² gross area. A 3 m² opening reduces paintable area to 7 m². With 1 m-wide wallpaper, the wall still has 4 horizontal drop positions unless a separate compatible cut plan reduces source drops. An illustrative 2 m wall at 0.5 m strip width needs four drop positions. A door may remove substantial surface area but still intersect two full-drop positions whose upper pieces and pattern alignment require the same source cuts. Subtracting the door’s square metres and dividing by roll area can wrongly predict a whole-roll saving without any proved cut allocation.
Check before using the estimate
Do not divide net wall area by nominal roll area and call that a matched-roll order.
