Solid wood, plywood and MDF: compare named products and dimensional bases.
Which material properties need a source before you compare a panel purchase?
Solid timber and panel products need distinct records
The USDA Wood Handbook treats wood-based panel products and moisture-related physical properties separately. Material behaviour can depend on species, product construction and moisture conditions. A generic claim that one material is always better or always stable ignores that basis.
Compare the selected product data
For solid wood, record species, actual dimensions and the stated moisture basis. For plywood or MDF, record the selected product grade, thickness, usable sheet dimensions and intended-use documentation. The guide does not select structural grades, load capacities, fire performance or exposure specifications.
Equal thickness does not establish equal suitability
A hypothetical 12 mm panel in one product and a 12 mm panel in another share a dimension, not every property. Keep source-backed suitability requirements separate from volume, sheet fit, finish coverage and the quoted price. Ask the supplier for missing product data rather than filling it with an unsupported ranking.
Price the actual stock schedule
If an established cut plan requires two sheets at illustrative quotes of 35 and 50 per sheet for two alternative approved products, the material totals are 70 and 100. Those totals do not include different finishing or supplied service costs and do not predict durability.
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Record the exact item and the scope described below.
- Check the cited guidance against your product or local growing conditions.
- Measure only the quantities needed for the selected plan.
- Keep the supplied assumptions with the purchase estimate.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Physical dimension | A measurement basis. |
| Product specification | A separate suitability record. |
| Quote | Whole stock units on the selected plan. |
Worked comparison
Two sheets quoted at 35 each cost 70; two sheets at 50 cost 100 before supplied delivery or other charges.
Check before using the estimate
No engineering property or material grade is chosen.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
Sources and product references
References support the factual distinctions and scope described above. Growing guidance is regional and care instructions are product-specific. Worked numerical examples are independent illustrative arithmetic.
