Separate theoretical coating film volume from a purchase estimate.
Can dry-film thickness replace a product coverage and container calculation?
Use the matching calculator
Use this decision sequence
- Use only the dry-film thickness already specified for an ordinary decorative finish.
- Read volume solids on the selected product basis, not its mass solids.
- Calculate the ideal wet film from the supplied solids fraction.
- Keep absorption, texture, application loss and package rounding outside the ideal-film result.
Keep the quantities distinct
| Quantity or assumption | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Dry film | Is the retained specified film volume. |
| Wet coating | Includes the portion that does not remain in that ideal film. |
| Product coverage quote | Can include practical assumptions absent from the ideal calculation. |
Worked comparison
At 50% volume solids, a specified 0.05 mm dry film corresponds to a 0.1 mm ideal wet film per coat. Over 100 m² this is 0.01 m³, or 10 L. It is theoretical volume before absorption, texture and losses; it does not prove that a 10 L purchase will complete the real surface.
Check before using the estimate
No thickness is selected. Protective, fire-rated and regulated coating applications are excluded from this tool. The example values are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Replace them with your measured plan, selected product information and actual quote where relevant.
All dimensions, product properties, prices and specifications in this example are illustrative arithmetic inputs. Use the values from your measured plan, selected product data sheet and supplier quote. This guide does not choose construction specifications or certify safety.
